Iran Claims Attack on US Base in Bahrain, As Part of Widespread Retaliatory Strikes.
Tehran reports attacking a American military facility in Manama, as Iran launched strikes across the region in retaliation for a large-scale and continuing assault targeting the nation by the US and Israel.
Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an vicinity in the area of the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The extent of any impact is unclear and the United States has not commented.
Missile Defenses Activated
Elsewhere across the region, the United Arab Emirates, the State of Qatar and the State of Kuwait - which all house American military installations - said they have engaged and destroyed missiles in their airspace.
In the Qatari capital, the Qatari Ministry of Defence announced it had intercepted a number of projectiles apparently targeting the al-Udeid air base, the largest American base in the Middle East.
Iran's Declared Retaliation
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard declared it was attacking US bases and assets as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in response for the offensive on the Islamic Republic carried out by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday morning.
That US-Israeli operation - executed at approximately 09:15 Iran time - has so far targeted locations linked to the Iranian leadership, with US President Donald Trump calling on the people of Iran to rise up against the regime.
Wider Impacts
In the State of Israel, sirens were heard across the country after the Israeli military stated it had identified an incoming Iranian missile barrage.
The defence ministry of the UAE announced that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".
"Emirati air defenses engaged the missiles with notable success and successfully intercepted a series of missiles," it added.
Officials reported wreckage fell on a neighborhood in Abu Dhabi, causing some material damage and killing a civilian.
The US Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
