According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a modest merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks working over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber could be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, which turned logs to planks using almost no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster than anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and artistic dominance across the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted the rotary motion into vertical motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead a measured step each cycle.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward motion while advancing with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of basic components.”
