Alleged Bondi Attackers Operated Alone and Did Not Preparation in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities Confirm.

The two suspected gunmen who carried out the deadly attack at a Jewish event on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, appear to have acted alone, per Australian police.

Investigators further stated that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary involved arriving in the main city Manila before transiting that same day to Davao City. The duo returned to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Planning During Visit

Investigators assert the duo did not receive any type of terrorist training or "logistical preparation" during their stay in the Philippines. Initial investigations from local authorities point to they "rarely left" their accommodation.

The shooting—declared Australia's worst firearm massacre since 1996—has been formally declared a terrorist incident.

"Our teams are currently reviewing the evidence," the commissioner said, adding that early evaluations show that "these individuals are believed to have been lone actors."

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett informed the press on Tuesday that security camera video showing the alleged gunmen's whereabouts in the Philippines had been handed over to domestic authorities.

"There is no evidence to indicate these accused individuals were part of a wider organization, or were instructed by others to execute an act of violence," Commissioner Barrett stated.

Yet, the men were also not necessarily in the Philippines for tourism, Commissioner Barrett added. She underscored that, as the inquiry is still active, additional details could emerge.

Inspiration and Court Charges

Earlier, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese said it looks as though both accused gunmen were "influenced by the so-called Islamic State" beliefs.

During the incident, Sajid Akram was killed by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—allegedly shot guests at the Hanukkah event.

Naveed Akram, who was hospitalised after the attack, has been charged with 59 offences. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. He is expected to appear in court in April.

Immigration Information

In the days following the attack, immigration officials in the Philippines indicated that the father had arrived in the country using an foreign passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The pair had declared the southern city of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their pre-arranged return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a sprawling metropolis on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' largest southern island. It is noted that, Islamist militants have reportedly be active in less developed parts of southern and western Mindanao.
